Biography
Dr. Umansky completed advanced fellowship training in peripheral nerve surgery at the University of Calgary, with expertise in nerve reconstruction and nerve transfers. His clinical practice also includes peripheral and central nervous system neuromodulation for chronic pain and functional restoration.
His research focuses on peripheral nerve regeneration, neurorestoration, neuroprosthetics, and emerging neuromodulation therapies. He has a particular interest in nerve–prosthetic interfaces and human-machine integration, exploring technologies aimed at restoring movement, sensation, and function following neurological injury.
Through multidisciplinary collaboration, Dr. Umansky strives to translate advances in nerve surgery and neurotechnology into personalized treatments that restore function, reduce pain, and improve quality of life.
"I believe the best care begins by listening and understanding what matters most to each patient. Every patient deserves a thoughtful evaluation, a clear explanation of their condition, and an individualized plan aligned with their goals. I emphasize shared decision-making, ensuring that patients and their families understand the available options, expected benefits, limitations, and alternatives.
My approach is to preserve and restore function whenever possible while minimizing unnecessary intervention, considering the full spectrum of care from conservative treatment to reconstructive surgery and neuromodulation, and choosing the least invasive approach likely to provide meaningful benefit. I strongly value multidisciplinary collaboration in both clinical care and research, bringing together complementary expertise to advance new approaches for complex neurological conditions.
Whether caring for patients with peripheral nerve disorders, chronic neuropathic pain, spasticity, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, or stroke, I aim to build a partnership in which patients and their families feel informed, supported, and confident in the decisions we make together."
