Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology is the subspecialty of dermatology concerned with the study, diagnosis, and management of malignancies of the skin and adjacent mucous membranes, cutaneous appendages, hair, nails, and subcutaneous tissue. The fellowship at the 蝌蚪窝 has a strong emphasis on cutaneous oncology, Mohs surgery, and reconstructive surgery.

The fellow will gain expertise in the following areas:

Cutaneous oncologic surgery. The fellow will gain medical, surgical and histologic knowledge of benign and malignant cutaneous neoplasms. There will be an emphasis placed on learning and performing Mohs micrographic surgery to treat malignant cutaneous neoplasms. The 蝌蚪窝/Froedtert Hospital is a large referral center in Southeastern Wisconsin. Therefore, the fellow will have exposure to a high volume of high risk and complex cutaneous oncology cases including solid organ transplant recipients. They will learn to work within a multidisciplinary team to care for patients with high risk and complex cutaneous malignancies. The fellowship faculty includes specialists from Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, and Head & Neck Surgery; the fellow will have unique opportunities to work with these faculty members and gain experience in all aspects of care related to management of complex malignancies.

Cutaneous reconstructive surgery. The fellow will learn the techniques required for the repair of skin and subcutaneous defects that result from the surgical removal of tumors. They will gain knowledge of cutaneous anatomy, wound healing, cutaneous repair techniques (linear repairs, flaps, grafts), scar revision, and aesthetic procedures that improve the appearance of the skin following surgery. In addition to helping with reconstructive surgeries performed by the Mohs surgeons, the fellow will also work with various subspecialties related to reconstructive surgery including Oculoplastic Surgery, ENT/Facial Plastics and Plastic Surgery. 

Publication: Each fellow must complete an original research project (clinical trial, cohort study, or systematic review/textbook chapter on a topic relevant to dermatologic surgery) that should result in submission to a peer-reviewed publication journal or textbook. The fellow will have one half day per week for academic pursuits/research.

Didactics for Residents: The fellow will present a lecture to the dermatology residents twice a year on a dermatologic surgery topic. The fellow will also assist attending physicians during hands-on procedural workshops for the residents (suturing, reconstruction, cosmetic and nail sessions). 

Didactics for Mohs clinic support staff: The fellow will present one lecture during the year to the Mohs surgery support staff on a topic of their choice.

Quality Improvement (QI) Project: The fellow will initiate at least one QI project within the Mohs clinic before completion of their training.

MCW Department of Dermatology Academic Half-Day presentation: The fellow will be expected to present on their quality improvement project or research findings to the Dermatology Department during one Academic Half Day.

National Presentation: The fellow will submit an abstract for the ACMS meeting prior to completion of their training.

Case log: To become a member of the American College of Mohs Surgeons, the fellow will be required to submit a case log of 500 Mohs micrographic surgery cases and 300 reconstructions.

Other Educational Opportunities:

Conferences: The fellow will attend the annual meeting of the American College of Mohs Surgery. Consideration will be given for attendance to other conferences if the fellow has an accepted abstract or presentation.

Surgical lectures: The fellow will be required to attend all MCW faculty didactic lectures that pertain to cutaneous oncology, reconstruction, and cosmetic dermatology.

Multidisciplinary tumor conferences: The fellow will attend and present patients at regular tumor conferences on a weekly basis, including the Advanced Skin Cancer Tumor Board, Head & Neck Tumor Board, and the Transplant Tumor Board.

Reading Curriculum: There will be a reading curriculum and Journal Club.

• Completion of an ACGME-accredited dermatology residency or equivalent international training.
• One-year commitment – length of training is 12 months and will start on August 1 of each year.
• Must obtain a Wisconsin medical license prior to the start of fellowship.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support training.

2026-2027 Application Cycle Update

Our MSDO program is accepting applications for the 2027-2028 cycle. The 蝌蚪窝 Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology fellowship program participates in the SFMatch. All application materials should be submitted using the SFMatch application portal. The application deadline is August 1, 2026. We are not accepting applications from international candidates this year.

Virtual interviews will be offered Monday, September 28. Invitations for virtual interviews will be extended in August 2026. Those invited for a virtual interview will be required to send an introduction video and a standard ACMS suturing video.
